Scuba diver

≈ February 12, 2015: Greg Jensen

This presentation will be about an hour starting at 7:30pm and will be on Crabs and Shrimp of the Pacific Coast including:

  • Identification of crabs and shrimps;
  • Reproduction (lots of kinky stuff);
  • Natural history (feeding, behavior etc.)

A short bio:

Greg Jensen grew up in the Pacific Northwest.
While growing up he studied aquatic animals in aquariums in the family's basement.
One thing leading to another, he became certified for diving in 1974 - as soon as he was old enough to do it without his parents' consent.

In 1981, Greg graduated from the University of Washington (UW) in Zoology, and worked for the Halibut Commission, for NOAA, and for UW before starting graduate school.
He received his Ph.D. in 1990 from the School of Fisheries at UW (his work was on porcelain crabs).

Since then, he's been doing a combination of teaching and research at the UW, at Shannon Pt. Marine Lab (Western Washington University), and at Bamfield Marine Station on Vancouver Island where he teaches a crustacean biology class every other year.

Greg has studied the behavior and ecology of Northwest Crustaceans, including doing extensive research on the invasive green crab and its effects on the West Coast.

He also worked on the taxonomy of shrimps and has described and named seven new species from the Pacific Northwest, plus one new hermit crab.

He recently published a book titled: “Crabs and Shrimps of the Pacific Coast,” a comprehensive guide for the west coast from southeastern Alaska to the Mexican border.
